Amber Infrastructure (‘Amber’), the specialist international infrastructure investment manager, is pleased to announce that it has successfully completed the sale of its investment in an operational rooftop solar photovoltaic (‘PV’) system for Marks and Spencer plc (‘M&S’) to Atrato Onsite Energy plc, the renewables investment trust.

Amber developed and invested in the commercial scale rooftop solar array at M&S East Midlands Distribution Centre in Castle Donington in 2014. The project involved the installation of 24,272 PV solar panels across a rooftop site spanning 900,000 sq ft, which was the largest rooftop solar panel in the UK at the time of investment. The project has been operational since 2015, with a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (‘PPA’) in place with M&S and is accredited under the Renewable Obligation Certificate (‘ROC’) regime at a rate of 1.6 ROCs per MGWh of generation.

In 2021, the project generated almost 5GWh of clean energy, the equivalent amount of energy to power 1,190 houses. This represents an emission saving of over 1,000 tonnes of CO2e.

This investment demonstrates Amber’s ability as an active developer and its long-term track record investing in the sustainable energy space. Amber continues to invest in projects with strong ESG attributes that support the energy transition.
