Amber Infrastructure Group (‘Amber’), the specialist international investment manager, has reached financial close on its managed investment in five New Zealand infrastructure assets.

The c.NZD 218 million (c.£108 million) portfolio was acquired from Morrison & Co on behalf of its London-listed investment company, International Public Partnerships (‘INPP’), and includes:

  • 11 schools across New Zealand, comprising the Hobsonville Point Primary and Secondary schools (NZ Schools I Public Private Partnership) together with NZ Schools II Public Private Partnership, and NZ Schools III Public Private Partnership;
  • A correctional facility in Auckland, noting responsibility only for the provision and maintenance of physical assets with custodial services provided independently by the New Zealand Department of Corrections, which was procured under a Public Private Partnership (PPP); and
  • Student accommodation at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT).

Amber’s Head of Asia-Pacific, Vaughan Wallace, said:This portfolio of essential infrastructure assets provides Amber with our first operations and team in the mature New Zealand market. Comprising three school projects across Auckland, Canterbury, Hamilton, and Queenstown, as well as a student accommodation facility at AUT, we see opportunities to leverage our extensive education sector expertise to create value at a local level.

“Our newly acquired high-quality assets have a proven track record, supported by strong partnerships with the relevant government departments. Importantly, we have also retained the existing well-respected New Zealand PPP project delivery team, providing operational continuity.

“While we are an international infrastructure manager, Amber has a local, hands-on approach to managing essential assets with a focus on building long-term value through enhanced sustainability initiatives. A local team of four also enables us to begin identifying complementary infrastructure assets to grow our New Zealand presence.

Financial close was achieved following regulatory approval from New Zealand’s Overseas Investment Office (OIO).
